Why do we do it? Why do we keep going back to classrooms and offices year after year, to educate yet another generation of young learners? We do it because this work is not a “job”, it’s a calling; one that is based on the belief that education is the most important thing you can give to a child – no matter what it takes. Ten days ago we saw a perfect example of this in the Eastern Cape, where Mamthembu (grandmother to Ovayo Mpakati) shared her family’s story.
After losing both her parents, as well as her aunt, at a young age, Ovayo’s early high school years were very tough. By the end of 2023, the family’s funds had run out and Mamthembu began using her monthly grant to pay school fees, leaving barely enough for groceries. But the family persevered, and on 14 January this year, it all came together. Thanks to her granny and the subsequent support of the school principal at Zingisa Comprehensive School, Ovayo has not only completed Grade 12, but she is also the second-highest performing student in OR Tambo Inland District. What’s more, Ovayo has earned a full bursary to study towards becoming a chartered accountant.
For Mamthembu, this feels like a dream come true. For all of us at DDD, it reminds us why we’re here, and inspires us to support you even more in 2025 – whatever it takes! We’ll start by sharing the top six things you can do with the DDD Dashboard this term to set your learners up for success.
